5 books about how hard it is to grow

5. “Good conscience” by Carlos Fuentes. Through the character of Jaime Ceballos Carlos Fuentes tells us about that horrible moment in our lives when we realize what adulthood means. When we realize adults ask young people to be honest but they are not honest themselves. When we realize that one day we will be adults with all the flaws of adulthood.
4. “Siddharta” by Hermann Hesse. This book is about a young boy that leaves his house looking for enlightenment. I think that although Siddharta is special there is something of him in all of us. At some point in our lives we all look for answers and try to find our place in this world. The thing is that not many of us are willing to leave everything behind to do it.
3. “Anne Frank's diary” by Anne Frank This is a very famous book written by a young Jewish girl who was hiding from the Nazis. Her story shows us that we all have similar experiences while growing up.
2. “Balun Canan” By Rosario Castellanos. This story is about how a little girl from the Mexican state of Chiapas (South of Mexico) discovers how ugly the world really is. Rosario Castellanos is a Mexican poet who wrote several novels. She is not as famous as other Mexican writers but I personally think she is one of the best.
1. “The catcher in the rye” by J.D. Salinger. This is The novel about teenagers. Some people say this novel created the concept of what a teenager is and what they go through. The main character in particular trough the story tries to prevent children from losing their innocence because he know how that is. By the way the story develops in New York.

In the US

Living in the US is difficult, specially for those who come from a collectivist and spiritual culture like the Mexican culture. American culture is very different to Mexican culture. In the US people are seen as individuals and not as part of a group, a family, a couple or a society. Because of it most Americans have very strong personalities. Their idea of themselves is very clear. Americans are not an extension of their parents or siblings and that is contrary to the Mexican idea that family defines you. Americans like to solve their problems on their own and be proud of it and that is contrary to the Mexican value of humility. For Americans progress is very important that is why they like having the latest technology. This is contrary to the Mexican idea that possessions are not important and if you can still use something you should even if it is not updated.
However I have to acknowledge that many aspects of the individualistic American culture are good. We all need to acknowledge at least once in our life that we are individuals with thoughts, ideas, personality and desires of our own and not always part of a group. Learning to solve our problems on our own and value our achievements can make us independent and confident. Of course we should never take something strictly literally. The secret is to know how to take the best of both worlds.

Gay parents

There has been a debate going on in Mexico for several weeks. The debate of whether or not gay couples should be able to adopt kids. Some say allowing gay couples to adopt is to take away from a child the right to have a father and a mother. It could be true that to grow up it is preferable to have a father and a mother. However those who are against gay adoption are not thinking about the wellbeing of the children but just following their own prejudices. The catholic church claims that the best way to start a family is trough an married heterosexual couple. The truth is that many married heterosexual couples that are even biological parents abuse their children. No catholic group (to my knowledge) has ever debated over the right of procreation of some heterosexual couples. Doing that would be out of the question. However they debate over the right of homosexual couples to raise children even though some homosexual couples are more stable and loving than some of their heterosexual counterparts.
The reality is that thinking of the wellbeing of the children and letting aside prejudices children are better off with a loving couple or person. The sexual preferences of the couple of person do not matter at the end. What matters is how much love the child will receive and how well the person or couple will take care of him or her. At the end of the day a parent is the one that raises the child.

Getting to know yourself

Getting to know yourself can take a lifetime. For some people it is very difficult because people around them have different expectations and hopes for their future. It is difficult to find out who you are when at the same time you are trying to satisfy your parents, siblings, friends and partner. Some people need to get away from it all to find him or herself. Some others have a strong personality and don't need to get away. The method one uses to find oneself is not important the important thing is to get there.
Knowing yourself is a powerful weapon. Knowing what makes you feel good, angry, sad, and what makes you laugh gives you the power to have your emotional stability in your own hands. It gives us the power to control or at least understand our moods and feelings. It improves our relations with others because we are no longer waiting for them to make us feel better when we can feel better by our own. It also stops us from blaming them for our bad feelings and moods when in reality we feel down because there is something wrong inside us. It prevents us from continuously try to put others down just to make us feel better. Knowing what we really want from life prevents us from following dreams that are not really ours. Knowing our abilities and weaknesses help us to believe in ourselves and know what we are capable of.
The advantages are many but the path is long and sometimes painful. Anyway, it is worth to try it.
