4”Mujercitas” de Louisa May Alcott.

5 books about what it feels like for a woman

Women are supposed to be full of virtues yet women are often excluded from the decision taking process in our society. These are five books about what it feels to be a woman. Men should read them to understand us better and women should read them because they can relate to these stories and understand a little bit more about our story and how much we have been trough as a gender.

5”Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. Jane is an orphan from a very early age and she goes trough a lot during the novel. Despite of getting little love and appreciation trough her life Jane believes in herself and rejects to be the mistress of the man she is in love with and marry a men she does not love because she knows she deserves better. Reading about Jane reminds us of those women that have been mistreated and abused and are still strong.

4”Little women” by Louisa May Alcott. It's the story of how four young women become adults. It shows how different we can be in our goals, desires, likes and personalities as women but also how much we can love each other despite our differences.

3”Tear this heart out” by Angeles Mastretta. Catalina married too young with a politician that turned out good for her when she was 15 and just wanted protection and a good life but he was all wrong for her when she turned 30 and wanted to do things. Many women face this situation of being with someone that does not believe they are capable of living their own lives. Catalina ends up proving this idea wrong.

2”Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert. One of the best novels of all times. It's the story of Emma Bovary. She married a man she was not in love with and got a life that was not enough for her. It's the constant problem of womanhood to end up dissatisfied just to conform with society.

1”Paula” by Isabel Allende. It's an autobiography that the author wrote for Paula, her dying daughter. It's a real story full of emotions, feelings and thoughts that are those of any woman. There is nothing like an honest story written by the women that lived it to understand what it feels like for a woman in this men's world

Soap operas and love

Everybody in Mexico has seen at least one soap opera. In fact, once you have seen one soap opera you have seen them all. All soap operas are the same, the leading characters meet and fall in love in the first chapter and are never together until the end. Soap operas are entertaining, no doubt about it, but we have to understand that love and relationships in real life are nothing similar to love and relationships in soap operas (or Disney movies).
In soap operas the male leading character is willing to change his flaws for love. In real life people don't change that easily. To change people have to go through a process, it takes time and effort and very few people is willing to do it. In soap operas relationship's problems are always because of some villain that tries to break up the couple. In real life relationship's problems are caused by the couple and very rarely by someone else. In soap operas people fight for love. In real life nobody should fight for a love that is not reciprocal or that is destructive. True love is beautiful not hurtful.
So, watching soap operas is nice but we have to keep in mind that no frog will become a prince with a kiss and real love is nothing like love in soap operas.

Mexico from outside

Everything looks different from outside. Some defects look bigger from outside but also some virtues look more beautiful and unique. For some unknown reason Mexicans think that outside is better. Mexicans think that other societies are better, that people think, read and don't allow themselves to be cheated by politicians. People think outside Mexico there is no crime and no envy. That is so not true. Mexican society's flaws are every society's flaws. This means we also are not poor because we are ignorant or uncooperative as some people think. Ignorance, hate, envy are present in every society just as wisdom, cooperation and kindness are. However, there are few societies as kind, polite, empathic, generous, hard working and cooperative as Mexican people. Mexicans think of others very often. They often think even what to say so that they do not offend others. They are always willing to help even strangers. They wake up and go to work every day even though financial and social circumstances are far from ideal in Mexico.
Every society has flaws and the flaws of the Mexican society are not particular. Fortunately Mexicans also have virtues and those are particular.

What is neoliberalism?

Neoliberalism is an economic term used sometimes in political speeches. Even though it is widely used many people do not know what that neoliberalism means.
Neoliberalists think that government should not intervene in economical matters. They think that government has no business in helping entrepreneurs, pushing for better work conditions for workers and that government managed firms should not exist. They think economical matters are better off with no government intervention.
Many American educated Mexican presidents like Carlos Salinas, Ernesto Zedillo and Felipe Calderon think that way. That's why Carlos Salinas privatized the government owned phone company and signed NAFTA. Vicente Fox had a not so neoliberal approach to things and that's why he created credits for small business owners.
The problem with neoliberals is that they take their doctrine to the extreme. They believe blindly in their ideas and go to the extreme of thinking that government should not help create new businesses in new industries and when people follow this advice countries end up like Mexico where there are no competitive industries and the only industry there is pays very low wages, where the government phone company was privatized and became a monopoly that charges the highest rates in the world, where thanks to NAFTA Mexican farmers could not compete with the big agricultural industry in the US and now the fields in Mexico are abandoned and migration to the US has increased.
The truth is that nothing should be done in excess. It is true that sometimes the government should not interfere in economical matters but leaving the economy completely unregulated and unsupervised is not a good idea and it even defies common sense.
