¿Dónde esta el dinero? II

Where is the money? II

Before, we talked about how every country needs money to invest and grow. It seems like the neoliberal model of waiting for the money to come from outside it is not a good idea. If money is needed. Why so many developing countries have so much international reserves?
International reserves are money (usually dollars, euros or British pounds) that are just sitting there in the central banks. International reserves serve to signal how well an economy is and are savings for a crisis. The problem is not that countries have savings the problem is that those savings are almost never used when they are needed and for what they are supposed to be used. Many times that money is used to pay foreign (usually American and European) investors when the firms and government cannot do so. So foreign investors end up with their money and poor citizens that are not to blame for the crisis end up with higher taxes and less services.
This is another reason why the neoliberal model is not right. At the end of the day money from inside the country could be used to invest and save with a good investment plan and not allowing the markets to do as they please. Whoever thinks the contrary has to explain how miracles that used this strategy like China ended up where they are now.

5 libros de seres sobrenaturales

5 books about supernatural beings

5. “At the mountains of madness” by H.P. Lovecraft. About some scientists working in the Antarctica that discover the rests of a civilization oldest than any human civilization. This civilization was very advanced at had a strict hierarchical system. The novel becomes a horror story when they discover this civilization ended when the low hierarchy rebelled violently against the high one. The horror is bigger when they discover the civilization is not completely gone.

4. “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley. The story of the famous monster created from several dead bodies and brought to life by his creator. Most of us know who he is but few know the original story talks about a lonely, isolated and misunderstood rather than evil soul.

3. “Death at intervals” by Jose Saramago. In this novel death takes a break. At the beginning everything is perfect then chaos arrives. This is a good reflection about death and a very entreating and funny at times story.

2. “Aura” by Carlos Fuentes. A young man falls in love with a young woman that is not what she seems to be. Short and unfairly infamous novel in Mexico.

1. “Dracula” de Bram Stoker. Now that vampires are everywhere we have to read the book that started it all. The original story is always the best.

Pro-life?

It's been three years since abortion is allowed in Mexico city. People is in favor and against it for many reasons. Some say they are against it because they are pro-life. However we have to remember that human beings all over the world waist millions of cells that have the potential for life. What makes different a fertilized egg and an unfertilized one? Sex. That seems to be the real source of discontent with the pro-life people at least in Mexico. For those people it's OK if a woman chooses not to have sex and passively destroy a cell that has the potential for life. But is is not OK to have sex and then destroy the fertilized egg that will otherwise make her undergo a huge physical and life change. It seems like a woman that decides to have sex deserves any possible punishment and does not have the right to chose how to deal with the consequences. This is also an explanation of why so many people that are pro-life and states in Mexico that do not allow abortion are in favor of abortion in case of violation.
This way of thinking would not be so bad if it was not so hypocritical. Sex is something very natural in the human being and that makes abortion very common (even among those who say they are pro-life). It would be much more healthy if we all could talk about it without judging and give every woman the choice over her sexual life and how to deal with the consequences.

Our European heritage

We Mexicans don't believe in ourselves. We think we're poor because we're lazy, because we like football, because we don't read, because we like TV, because we don't like museums, because we like the easy life, because we are always late, because we like to party, because we're sexists, because we like to drink, because we are brute, because we are brutal, because we are believers, because we are emotionless,...
The blame is on us, or so the Europeans said from the first time they set a foot in the Americas. When Europeans invade a country they use the lack of civility of the invaded country as an excuse in spite that Europeans aren't really as civilized as they like to think. They raped, murdered, robbed and exploited any people they ever conquered, but when it comes to Europeans those crimes are not called brutal they are called necessary. But that way of thinking sticked in our Mexican minds, we think everything bad that happens to us is our fault and the vices are exclusively ours. We keep on calling ourselves lazy in spite that in Europe the work day is shorter. In England and Spain they also love football. In the US people watch an insane amount of TV and never really go to the great museums they have in their country...The biggest and more hurtful part of our European heritage, the one that is not in our veins or our faces is the one that has impeded us to move forward: The false idea that we are less than them, that we are the cause of our own disgrace.
