Growing

Growing is what life is about, life is about experiencing things, exploring the world, learning to make a living (or as we say in Mexico chasing the steak) and more important learning how to deal with people good and bad. My favorite part of growing is that while we grow we also acquire wisdom, independence and authority. Those seem such important things for me that I don't understand the obsession of modern society with teenagers. I get the fact that having few responsibilities and many dreams about your future seem very appealing but when I remember who I was as a teenager I feel relieved I am not that naive girl anymore. I am proud of myself for obtaining more and more financial and emotional independence and for becoming a well respected autonomous woman. Of course becoming that woman has a cost. I had to face harsh realities and let go of many dreams because I realized they were implausible and that was hard. However, even if now my brain is not as fast as it was at eighteen, even if I no longer can dance the whole night without feeling like dying next morning I love to grow. I love all the changes and experiences life has given to me. I love who I am now and I hope I'll learn to love who I'll become despite the wrinkles and the dreams I'll have to leave behind.

  1. In a modern society I would tend to link almost anything to ingenious methods to boost consumption. As far as I know, in many traditional societies youth is inferior. As you already suggested, getting older implies getting wiser and having authority. Youth lacks the wisdom and the authority, hence the inferiority. However, the modern society tries to impose upon us the cult of youth and beauty. It is the grown-ups and senior people who have the most money to spend and this worshipping of young and beautiful is the best way to make them pour money on ways to get their lost youth back.
I admit that I do appreciate youth and also, there is nothing wrong with splashing out from time to time to make ourselves feel better. But this whole corporate plan behind the youth adoration is plain ugly. Superficial things rule the world.

  2. I never thought that was the reason and I think you make perfect sense. I also admit I like to take care of myself but I like to look my age just well preserved. I believe that is the right attitude.

  3. I agree teenagers can be a bit naive. But some dreams are realistic while others aren't. Like becoming a famous movie star isn't realistic for most people. What kind of dreams do you mean?

  4. One of my dreams was to entirely change my country (Mexico). I didn't even had a concrete plan just a bunch of ideas that should be implemented to make of my country a rich and peaceful country. I still think I can do a lot to improve my country, but now I see the time and money constraint and the fact that some people do not want to change and have a more concrete plan (This blog is part of the plan. I think many issues are not talked about in Mexico and they are in need to be discussed). Now I understand that changing the entire country is going to be difficult and I don't think I am going to see the whole outcome of my efforts in my lifetime but I am happy just to change one or two opinions.
